விளக்கம் · Explanation

“ஆம்” (ஆமாம்) = ஒப்புதல். மறுப்புக்கு இரு சொற்கள் உண்டு — “இல்லை” மற்றும் “அல்ல”. இவை வெவ்வேறு பொருள் தரும்; கவனம் தேவை.

ஆம் (or ஆமாம்) = “yes.” But Tamil has TWO words for the negative, and they are not interchangeable: இல்லை and அல்ல. This lesson teaches the difference carefully.

“இல்லை” = இல்லாமை / இருப்பின்மை. “பணம் இல்லை” = பணம் இல்லாதது. வினாவுக்கு “No” என்றும் இல்லை.

இல்லை means “there isn’t / does not exist”, and also serves as plain “no.” பணம் இல்லை = “there is no money.” நீ வருகிறாயா? — இல்லை = “Are you coming? — No.”

“அல்ல” = இனம்/அடையாள மறுப்பு. “அவன் ஆசிரியர் அல்ல” = அவன் ஆசிரியர் என்பது உண்மை அல்ல. “இது மரம் அல்ல” = இது மரம் என்னும் அடையாளம் தவறு.

அல்ல denies an IDENTITY (“X is not Y”). அவன் ஆசிரியர் அல்ல = “he is not a teacher” (he exists, but he isn’t that). Compare: அது புத்தகம் அல்ல (it’s not a book) vs புத்தகம் இல்லை (there is no book). Identity → அல்ல; existence/availability → இல்லை.
