விளக்கம் · Explanation

ஒரு செயலின் இலக்கு (object) எது என்று காட்ட, அந்தப் பெயருடன் “ஐ” சேர்க்கிறோம். புத்தகம் + ஐ → புத்தகத்தை. பழம் + ஐ → பழத்தை.

To show the target of an action — what you read, eat, or see — add the accusative ending -ai (ஐ) to the noun. The noun is the object; the -ai marks it. This is வேற்றுமை 2.

“-ம்” என்று முடியும் சொற்களின் ஒடிசல் வடிவம் (oblique stem) “-த்து-” ஆகும்: புத்தகம் → புத்தகத்து-, பழம் → பழத்து-. அதன்மேல் ஐ வரும்: புத்தகத்தை.

Nouns ending in -m change to a -ttu- oblique stem before endings: புத்தகம் → புத்தகத்து-, then + ஐ → புத்தகத்தை. Likewise பழம் → பழத்து- → பழத்தை. Learn the stem once and every case follows.

படி, சாப்பிடு போன்ற வினைகள் இலக்கை எதிர்பார்க்கும். “புத்தகத்தைப் படிக்கிறேன்” — படிப்பதன் இலக்கு புத்தகம்.

Verbs like படி (read) and சாப்பிடு (eat) take an object. Note the hardening: after -தை, படிக்கிறேன் begins with a doubled stop — புத்தகத்தைப் படிக்கிறேன். This வல்லினம் மிகுதல் is normal and you will feel it naturally.
