விளக்கம் · Explanation

நேரப் பகுதியைக் காட்டவும் “இல்” வரும்: காலை → காலையில், மாலை → மாலையில், இரவு → இரவில். இது “எப்போது” என்பதற்கு விடை.

The locative -il also marks a stretch of time — “in / at.” காலையில் (in the morning), மாலையில் (in the evening), இரவில் (at night). It answers “when?” for parts of the day, days, and months.

ஆனால் கடிகார நேரத்துக்கு (clock time) “கு / க்கு” பயன்படும்: ஆறு மணிக்கு, ஏழு மணிக்கு. நாள்களில் “இல்”: திங்கட்கிழமையில், ஞாயிற்றுக்கிழமையில்.

One exception worth noting: exact clock times take the dative -ku, not -il: ஆறு மணிக்கு (at six o'clock), ஏழு மணிக்கு (at seven). Days and months take -il: திங்கட்கிழமையில் (on Monday), மே மாதத்தில் (in May).
