How a rule (nūṟpā) is stated and applied

You already say பூ + ஐ = பூவை without error. Behind it stands a nūṟpā. Today you learn to read a rule and turn it into a word — the core skill for all of Arc B.

நூற்பா (சூத்திரம்) என்பது குறைந்த சொற்களில் ஒரு விதியைச் சொல்லும் தொடர். அதைப் படிக்கும்போது மூன்று கேள்வி: எந்தச் சூழல்? என்ன மாற்றம்? என்ன எடுத்துக்காட்டு? நன்னூல் நூற்பாவை இம்மூன்றாகப் பிரித்தால் புரியும்.

A nūṟpā packs a rule into the fewest words. Read it by asking three things: in what context? what change happens? what is the example? Splitting a Naṉṉūl rule this way makes it open up.

இது ஒரு உண்மையான புணர்ச்சி விதி (modern Tamil-இல்). சூழல்: உயிரில் முடியும் சொல் + உயிர் தொடங்கும் விகுதி. மாற்றம்: இடையே ய் அல்லது வ் (உடம்படுமெய்) தோன்றும். எடுத்துக்காட்டு: கதி + ஐ → கதியை; பூ + ஐ → பூவை.

Here is a real puṇarcci rule (stated in modern Tamil). Context: a vowel-final word meets a vowel-initial suffix. Change: a glide consonant ய் or வ் (உடம்படுமெய்) is inserted. Example: கதி + ஐ → கதியை; பூ + ஐ → பூவை.

ஒவ்வொரு விதிக்கும் ஒரு சூழல் (condition) உண்டு. சொல் அந்தச் சூழலுக்கு உட்பட்டால்தான் விதி வேலை செய்யும். “மரம் + ஐ”-இல் சொல் மெய்யில் முடிகிறது; எனவே உடம்படுமெய் வராது — வேறு விதி (சார்பு நிலை) செயல்படும்.

Every rule carries a condition. It fires only if the word fits that condition. In மரம் + ஐ the word ends in a consonant, so no glide is inserted — a different rule (the oblique stem) applies. Matching the condition is everything.
