உம்மைத்தொகை, வினைத்தொகை முதலியவற்றில் வல்லினம் மிகாது.

In several compound types the hard stop stays single.

“தாய்தந்தை”, “சுடுசோறு”, “எண்திசை” — இவற்றில் வல்லினம் இரட்டிக்கவில்லை. ஆனால் “மரக்கொம்பு”-வில் இரட்டித்தது. ஏன் வேறுபாடு? பொருளுறவு வேறு என்பதே காரணம்.

தாய்தந்தை (mother-and-father), சுடுசோறு (hot rice), எண்திசை (eight directions) — here nothing doubled, yet மரக்கொம்பு doubled. The difference is not the letters but the kind of meaning-relation inside the compound.

உம்மைத்தொகையில் வருமொழி வல்லினம் மிகாது.

விதி 1

In an உம்மைத்தொகை (a copulative compound joining equals — 'A and B'), the hard stop does NOT double, because there is no governing case relation.

‘தாய்தந்தை’ = தாயும் தந்தையும். இரண்டும் சமம்; ஒன்று மற்றொன்றை ஆளவில்லை. ஆகவே வல்லினம் மிகாது. ‘மரக்கொம்பு’-வில் ஒன்று மற்றொன்றுக்கு உரியது; அங்கே மிகும்.

தாய்தந்தை means 'mother and father' — two equal items, neither governing the other, so no doubling. In மரக்கொம்பு one belongs to the other (a case relation), so it doubles. Compare the two senses and the rule follows.

வினைத்தொகை, எண்ணுப்பெயர் ஈறு போலும் சில இடங்களிலும் வல்லினம் மிகாது.

விதி 2

In a வினைத்தொகை (a verb-noun compound like சுடு-சோறு, 'rice that is hot/cooking') and after some number-words, the hard stop also stays single.

‘சுடுசோறு’ = சுடுகின்ற சோறு (வினைத்தொகை) — மிகாது. ‘எண்திசை’ = எட்டுத் திசை, ஆனால் ‘எண்’ ஈற்றில் வல்லினம் மிகாது. மனப்பாடம் அல்ல; பொருளுறவையே நோக்க வேண்டும்.

சுடுசோறு is 'rice that is hot' (a hidden verb), so no doubling. எண்திசை keeps its stop single too. The lesson: do not memorise word-pairs — read the relation. Case-relation compounds double; coordinate and verbal ones usually do not.
