“உடைய” நீண்ட வடிவம்; அதே உரிமையை ஒரு பெயருக்கு முன் குறுகிய வடிவத்தாலும் சொல்லலாம்: என் வீடு (= என்னுடைய வீடு), உன் ஊர், அவன் பெயர், அவள் கை.
Besides the long -uṭaiya, Tamil has short possessive forms that sit straight in front of a noun: என் வீடு (= என்னுடைய வீடு, my house), உன் ஊர் (your town), அவன் பெயர் (his name), அவள் கை (her hand). Both mean the same; the short form is everyday and crisp.
குறுகிய வடிவங்கள்: என் (my), உன் (your), அவன் (his), அவள் (her), அவர் (his/her, மரியாதை), நம் (our, உள்ளடக்கு), எம்/எங்கள் (our, தவிர்), உங்கள் (your, மரியாதை/பன்மை), அவர்கள் (their).
The short genitives are: என் (my), உன் (your), அவன் (his), அவள் (her), அவர் (his/her, respectful), நம் (our, including you), எங்கள் (our, not including you), உங்கள் (your, respectful/plural), அவர்கள் (their). Note நம் vs எங்கள் — Tamil distinguishes inclusive and exclusive “we.”
