நரியும் திராட்சையும்
 ஆசிரியர் —  ஒரு நாள் ஒரு நரிக்குப் பசி எடுத்தது. 
One day a fox felt hungry.  
 ஆசிரியர் —  அது ஒரு கொடியில் இனிய திராட்சைப் பழங்களைப் பார்த்தது. ஆனால் அவை உயரத்தில் இருந்தன. 
It saw sweet grapes on a vine. But they were up high.  
 நரி —  நான் குதித்தால் எட்டுவேன். 
If I jump I will reach them.  
 ஆசிரியர் —  நரி பல முறை குதித்தது. ஆனால் ஒரு பழமும் எட்டவில்லை. 
The fox jumped many times. But it could not reach a single fruit.  
 நரி —  சே! இந்தத் திராட்சை புளிக்கும். எனக்கு வேண்டாம். 
Bah! These grapes must be sour. I don't want them.  

விளக்கம் · Explanation

“எட்டவில்லை” என்பது எதிர்மறை இறந்தகாலம் — “எட்ட முடியவில்லை” என்னும் பொருளில். நரி தனக்குக் கிடைக்காததை இழிவாகச் சொல்கிறது: “புளிக்கும்” (புளிப்பாக இருக்கும்).

எட்டவில்லை is the negative past (could not reach). When something is out of reach, the fox belittles it: புளிக்கும் — it will be / must be sour. This is the famous sour-grapes excuse.

கதையை மீண்டும் சொல்லும்போது அதே சொற்களைப் பயன்படுத்த வேண்டியதில்லை. “நரிக்குப் பழம் வேண்டும், ஆனால் கிடைக்கவில்லை” என்று சுருக்கமாகவும் சொல்லலாம்.

When you retell, you need not copy the words. You can summarise: நரிக்குப் பழம் வேண்டும், ஆனால் கிடைக்கவில்லை (the fox wanted fruit, but did not get it).
