Reporting what someone said using …என்று சொன்னான்.

விளக்கம் · Explanation

மற்றவர் சொன்னதை அப்படியே சொல்லி “என்று” சேர்த்து, பின் சொல்லும் வினை வைக்கவும்: “வருகிறேன் என்று சொன்னான்.” “என்று” = (saying) that / quotation marker.

Repeat the exact words, add என்று (the quoting word, like ‘that’ or quotation marks), then the reporting verb: வருகிறேன் என்று சொன்னான் = he said, ‘I'm coming.’ Tamil normally keeps the original words rather than shifting the pronouns.

சொல்லும் வினை பேசியவருக்கு ஏற்ப மாறும்: சொன்னான் (he), சொன்னாள் (she), சொன்னார் (respect/elder), சொன்னார்கள் (they). கேள்வியை எடுத்துரைக்க “கேட்டான்” பயன்படும்: “எங்கே போகிறாய் என்று கேட்டான்.”

The reporting verb agrees with the speaker: சொன்னான் (he), சொன்னாள் (she), சொன்னார் (respectful), சொன்னார்கள் (they). For a reported question use கேட்டான்: எங்கே போகிறாய் என்று கேட்டான் = he asked where (you) are going.

Report three things people said to you today: … என்று அம்மா சொன்னாள், … என்று நண்பன் சொன்னான், … என்று ஆசிரியர் சொன்னார். Keep the original words inside, then add என்று and the right verb.
