“க்” தனியே ஒலிக்காது; “க” என்று உயிர் சேர்ந்தால்தான் ஒலிக்கும். மெய்க்கு உயிர் தேவை என்பதை நீங்கள் பேசும்போதே செய்கிறீர்கள். அந்த இணைப்பை இப்போது எண்ணிப் பார்ப்போம்.

The bare க் does not sound; only க (k + a) does. A consonant needs a vowel to be voiced — you do this automatically when speaking. Now we count those pairings.

மெய்யெழுத்து பதினெட்டு. வல்லினம் ஆறு: க் ச் ட் த் ப் ற். மெல்லினம் ஆறு: ங் ஞ் ண் ந் ம் ன். இடையினம் ஆறு: ய் ர் ல் வ் ழ் ள். மெய் தனியே ஒலியாது; புள்ளி (்) அதன் அடையாளம்.

There are eighteen consonants. வல்லினம் (hard) ×6: க் ச் ட் த் ப் ற். மெல்லினம் (soft/nasal) ×6: ங் ஞ் ண் ந் ம் ன். இடையினம் (middle) ×6: ய் ர் ல் வ் ழ் ள். A bare consonant carries a புள்ளி (dot).

மெய் + உயிர் = உயிர்மெய். எடுத்துக்காட்டு: க் + அ = க; க் + ஆ = கா. பதினெட்டு மெய் ஒவ்வொன்றும் பன்னிரண்டு உயிருடன் சேர்வதால் 18 × 12 = 216 உயிர்மெய் எழுத்துகள்.

Consonant + vowel = உயிர்மெய். So க் + அ = க, க் + ஆ = கா. Each of the 18 consonants joins each of the 12 vowels: 18 × 12 = 216 syllable-letters.

ஆய்தம் (ஃ) என்பது தனிச் சார்பெழுத்து — மூன்று புள்ளி. மொத்தம்: 12 + 18 + 216 + 1 = 247 எழுத்து. முதலெழுத்து உயிரும் மெய்யும் (30); ஏனைய சார்பெழுத்து (உயிர்மெய், ஆய்தம், ஒற்று…).

The ஆய்தம் (ஃ, three dots) is a special letter. Grand total: 12 + 18 + 216 + 1 = 247. The 30 vowels and consonants are முதலெழுத்து (primary); the rest — syllables, āytam, the dotted ஒற்று — are சார்பெழுத்து (dependent).
