அ ஆ உ ஊ ஒ ஓ ஔ பின் உயிர் வந்தால் வ் உடம்படுமெய்.

After the remaining vowels the glide is வ், not ய்.

விதிகள் · The rules

இ ஈ எ ஏ ஐ அல்லாத ஏனை உயிர்களில் முடியும் சொல்லின்பின் உயிர் வந்தால், உடம்படுமெய் ‘வ்’ ஆகும்.

விதி 1

If the first word ends in any vowel other than இ ஈ எ ஏ ஐ — that is, in அ ஆ உ ஊ ஒ ஓ ஔ (the ஏனை, 'remaining', vowels) — the glide is வ்.

பூ + ஐ → பூவை. பல + அர் → பலவர். விளக்கு + ஐ அல்ல — அது குற்றியலுகரம் (அடுத்த பாடம்). ஆனால் ‘ஆ’, ‘ஊ’, ‘ஓ’ போன்ற நெடில்களின் பின் ‘வ்’ உறுதி: பூ + ஐ → பூவை, கோ + ஐ → கோவை.

பூ + ஐ → பூவை. பல + அர் → பலவர். கோ + ஐ → கோவை. The rule is simply the complement of the ய் rule: the two together cover every vowel, so there is never any doubt which glide to use.

உடம்படுமெய் ய், வ் என இரண்டே; முதற்சொல்லின் ஈற்று உயிரைப் பார்த்தே எது என்று அறிக.

விதி 2

There are exactly two glides, ய் and வ். Look at the final vowel of the first word to decide: front vowel → ய், otherwise → வ். This is the whole of vowel-meets-vowel puṇarcci.

ஒரு எளிய சோதனை: சொல் இ/ஈ/எ/ஏ/ஐ-வில் முடிந்தால் ‘ய்’; இல்லையெனில் ‘வ்’. சந்தேகமே இல்லை.

A quick test: does the word end in இ/ஈ/எ/ஏ/ஐ? Then ய். If not, வ். Two rules, no overlap, no exceptions in this domain.
