இ ஈ எ ஏ ஐ பின் உயிர் வந்தால் ய் உடம்படுமெய் தோன்றும்.

After இ ஈ எ ஏ ஐ a vowel triggers the glide ய்.

“கதியை”, “மெய்யை”, “தீயை” என்று நீங்கள் ஏற்கனவே சொல்லியிருக்கிறீர்கள். “கதி + ஐ” என்று நேராகச் சேர்த்தால் இரு உயிர் (இ, ஐ) மோதும். அதைத் தடுக்க இடையே ‘ய்’ வந்து உதவுகிறது.

You already say கதியை (the path, acc.) and மெய்யை (the body/truth, acc.). If you simply glued கதி + ஐ, two vowels would crash together. To prevent that, a little ‘ய்’ slips in to help — that helper is an உடம்படுமெய்.

உயிர் உயிரை எதிர்கொள்ளும்போது, அவ்விரண்டையும் ‘உடம்பட’ வைக்க இடையே ஒரு மெய் தோன்றும்; அதனை உடம்படுமெய் என்பர்.

விதி 1

When a vowel meets a vowel, a consonant appears between them to let the two 'agree' (uṭampaṭa). That inserted consonant is the உடம்படுமெய், the glide.

இரு உயிர் நேராகச் சேர முடியாது. ஆகவே நடுவில் ‘ய்’ அல்லது ‘வ்’ என ஒரு மெய் வந்து இணைக்கிறது. எந்த மெய் என்பது நிலைமொழியின் கடைசி உயிரைப் பொறுத்தது.

Two vowels cannot sit directly side by side in Tamil. A consonant — ய் or வ் — steps in to bridge them. Which one depends on the final vowel of the first word; this lesson covers ய்.

இ ஈ எ ஏ ஐ என்னும் உயிர்களில் முடியும் சொல்லின்பின் உயிர் வந்தால், உடம்படுமெய் ‘ய்’ ஆகும்.

If the first word ends in இ, ஈ, எ, ஏ or ஐ and a vowel follows, the inserted glide is ய். (These are the front vowels — your tongue is already near the ய் position.)

கதி + ஐ → கதியை. மெய் + ஐ → மெய்யை. தீ + ஐ → தீயை. பகை + அர் → பகையர். இவ்வைந்து உயிர்களை மனத்தில் வையுங்கள்: இ, ஈ, எ, ஏ, ஐ.

கதி + ஐ → கதியை. மெய் + ஐ → மெய்யை. தீ + ஐ → தீயை. Memorise the five trigger-vowels for ய்: இ, ஈ, எ, ஏ, ஐ. Anything else takes வ் instead (next lesson).
