The full negation system

“நான் வரவில்லை”, “நான் வரமாட்டேன்” என்று மறுப்பதை முதல் பகுதியில் கற்றீர்கள். தமிழின் எதிர்மறை மிகவும் வளமானது — காலம், மறுப்பு, தடை ஒவ்வொன்றுக்கும் தனி வடிவம்.

You already said வரவில்லை (didn't come) and வரமாட்டேன் (won't come). Tamil negation is rich — each shade (past, refusal, habit, prohibition) has its own form. We will sort them out.

‘ஐ’ ஈற்று வினையெச்சத்தோடு ‘இல்லை’ சேர்த்தால் இறந்த/நிகழ் எதிர்மறை: செய்ய + இல்லை → செய்யவில்லை. இது பால்-எண் வேறுபாடற்றது — எல்லாருக்கும் ஒன்றே.

Add இல்லை to the infinitive (செய்ய) to negate the past or present: செய்யவில்லை (did not / does not do). This one form serves every person — நான்/அவன்/அவர்கள் all use செய்யவில்லை.

விருப்பத்துடன் கூடிய எதிர்கால மறுப்பு ‘மாட்டு’: செய்யமாட்டேன் (நான்), செய்யமாட்டான் (அவன்), செய்யமாட்டார்கள் (அவர்கள்). இது ‘செய்யப் போவதில்லை’ என்னும் உறுதி.

To refuse a future action use மாட்டு + ending: செய்யமாட்டேன் (I won't), செய்யமாட்டான் (he won't), செய்யமாட்டார்கள் (they won't). It carries firm intent — 'will not'.

‘செய்வது + இல்லை → செய்வதில்லை’ என்பது வழக்கமாகச் செய்யாமை: ‘அவன் பொய் சொல்வதில்லை’ (he does not lie, as a habit).

The habitual negative is the verbal noun + இல்லை: செய்வது + இல்லை → செய்வதில்லை. அவன் பொய் சொல்வதில்லை = he does not lie (as a rule).

‘வேண்டாம்’ = வேண்டா/மறு; ‘கூடாது’ = தகாது/தடை; செந்தமிழில் காலமற்ற எதிர்மறை ‘செய்யேன்’ (நான் செய்யேன்), ‘செய்யான்’ (அவன் செய்யான்) — எக்காலத்திற்கும் பொருந்தும்.

வேண்டாம் = 'don't / no need'; கூடாது = 'must not'. Classical Tamil also has a tenseless negative: செய்யேன் (I do/will not), செய்யான் (he does/will not) — true for any time.
