எதிர் காலமும் ‘உம்’ விகுதியும்
The future, and the -um neuter

“நாளை நான் வருவேன்”, “மழை வரும்” — எதிர்காலத்தை அர்ஸ் A-விலேயே பயன்படுத்தினீர்கள். உயர்திணைக்கும் அஃறிணைக்கும் முடிவு வேறுபடுவதைக் கவனியுங்கள்.

You already used the future: வருவேன் (I will come), மழை வரும் (it will rain). Notice the rational and non-rational subjects end differently — that split is the heart of this lesson.

உயர்திணை எழுவாய்க்கு (மனிதர்) எதிர்கால இடைநிலை ப்/வ்: செய் → செய்வேன், படி → படிப்பேன். விகுதிகள் வழக்கம் போல் ஏன்/ஆய்/ஆன்/ஆள்/ஓம்/ஈர்கள்/ஆர்கள்.

For rational subjects the future marker is ப் or வ்: செய்வேன் (I will do), படிப்பேன் (I will read). The usual endings follow — ஏன், ஆய், ஆன், ஆள், ஓம், ஈர்கள், ஆர்கள்.

அஃறிணை (பொருள்/விலங்கு) எதிர்காலத்தில் ‘உம்’ பெறும்: மரம் வளரும், நாய் குரைக்கும். மேலும் ‘உம்’ பால்-எண் வேறுபாடின்றிப் பொதுவாகவும் வரும்: ‘இது நடக்கும்’.

Non-rational subjects take -உம் in the future: மரம் வளரும் (the tree will grow), நாய் குரைக்கும் (the dog will bark). The same -உம் also serves as a general, person-neutral future: இது நடக்கும் (this will happen).

‘உம்’ வடிவம் ‘வழக்கமான உண்மை’யையும் சொல்லும்: ‘சூரியன் கிழக்கில் உதிக்கும்’ — எப்போதும் நிகழும் உண்மை, வெறும் எதிர்காலம் அன்று.

The -உம் form also states habitual or timeless truths: சூரியன் கிழக்கில் உதிக்கும் (the sun rises in the east). Here it is a general truth, not only a future event.
