Past tense II — the irregular stems

போனேன், வந்தேன், தந்தேன், சாப்பிட்டேன், சொன்னேன், கேட்டேன், இருந்தேன்.

The common irregular past stems, learned as a set.

“நான் சொன்னேன்”, “அவன் போனான்”, “நான் கேட்டேன்” — இவற்றை அர்ஸ் A-வில் மனப்பாடமாகக் கற்றீர்கள். இவை விதிக்கு முழுதும் அடங்காதவை; ஒரு தொகுப்பாகக் கற்பதே சிறந்தது.

You learned சொன்னேன் (I said), போனான் (he went), கேட்டேன் (I asked) by heart in Arc A. These stems do not follow the regular rule neatly, so the wise way is to learn them as a fixed set.

விதிகள் · The rules

சில அடிகள் இறந்த காலத்தில் தம் வடிவத்தை மாற்றியே இடைநிலையேற்கும்.

விதி 1

இவ்வினைகள் இறந்தகாலத்தில் அடியையே சற்று மாற்றும்: போ → போன்-, வா → வந்த்-, தா → தந்த்-. மாறிய அடியோடு வழக்கமான விகுதிகள் சேரும்.

A handful of roots change their own shape before the past ending: போ → போன்-, வா → வந்த்-, தா → தந்த்-. Once the stem is set, the ordinary endings (ஏன், ஆன், …) attach normally.

மெய்ம்மயக்கத்தால் ‘ல்’, ‘ள்’ ஈற்று அடிகள் ‘ன்ன்’, ‘ட்ட்’ ஆகத் திரியும்.

விதி 2

‘ல்’ ஈற்று சொல் + த் → சொன்ன் (சொல்+த்→சொன்ன்), அதனால் சொன்னேன். ‘ள்’ ஈற்று கேள் + த் → கேட்ட், அதனால் கேட்டேன். இது மெய்ம்மயக்கப் புணர்ச்சி.

By consonant assimilation (மெய்ம்மயக்கம்) an ல்-final root like சொல் + த் becomes சொன்ன் → சொன்னேன்; an ள்-final root like கேள் + த் becomes கேட்ட் → கேட்டேன். The marker fuses into the stem.

‘தா’ வினைக்கு இரு நிலை: தந்தேன் (எனக்கு/உனக்கு), கொடுத்தேன் (மூன்றாம் நபர்க்கு).

விதி 3

தமிழில் ‘கொடு’ வேறு, ‘தா’ வேறு. பேசுவோனுக்கோ கேட்போனுக்கோ கொடுத்தால் ‘தா’ → தந்தேன்; மூன்றாம் நபருக்குக் கொடுத்தால் ‘கொடு’ → கொடுத்தேன்.

Tamil splits 'give' by direction. Giving to me or you uses தா → தந்தேன்; giving to a third party uses கொடு → கொடுத்தேன். Keep them distinct.

அடியை இறந்தகால ‘நான்’ வடிவத்தோடு பொருத்துக. Match each root to its past 'I' form.

வாக்கியம் அமை — “I ate the meal.” Arrange the words (சாப்பிடு → சாப்பிட்டேன்).
