ஆறாம் நிலையில் “கை கொடு” (உதவு), “தலையில் கை வை” (கவலைப்படு) போன்ற மரபுத்தொடரைக் கேட்டீர்கள். சொல்லுக்குச் சொல் பொருள் கொள்ளாமல், மறைபொருளைப் புரிந்துகொண்டீர்கள். இப்போது அவற்றைப் பகுத்து அறிவோம்.

தனிச் சொற்களின் நேர்ப்பொருளைக் கூட்டினால் வராத, வழக்கால் வந்த ஒரு பொருளைத் தருவது மரபுத்தொடர். “கை கொடு” என்றால் கையைத் தருவதன்று, உதவுவது. நேர்ப்பொருளால் மொழிபெயர்க்கலாகாது.

An idiom carries a meaning fixed by usage, not got by adding up the words. கை கொடு does not mean to hand over a hand — it means to help. Never translate an idiom word-for-word.

பல தலைமுறை அனுபவத்தை ஒரு குறுந்தொடராகத் தொகுத்து, ஓர் அறிவுரை தருவது பழமொழி. “அகழ்வாரைத் தாங்கும் நிலம் போல் தம்மை இகழ்வார்ப் பொறுத்தல் தலை” — பொறுமையின் உயர்வைச் சொல்லும் ஒரு குறள். பழமொழியின் பொருளைச் சூழலோடு பொருத்திக் கொள்ளவேண்டும்.

A proverb compresses the experience of generations into a short phrase that teaches. The kuṟaḷ அகழ்வாரைத் தாங்கும் நிலம் போல் தம்மை இகழ்வார்ப் பொறுத்தல் தலை — 'as the earth bears those who dig it, bearing with those who scorn you is supreme' — praises patience. Read a proverb against its situation.
