செந்தமிழும் பேச்சுத் தமிழும்
Literary Tamil and spoken Tamil

எழுதப்படும் செந்தமிழுக்கும் பேசப்படும் தமிழுக்கும் இடையிலான இருநிலை வழக்கு; வட்டார வழக்குகள்; தனித்தமிழ் இயக்கம்.

The register gap between written and spoken Tamil, the regional varieties, and the Pure Tamil movement.

நினைவுகூர் · You already know this

You have finished twelve levels and can take any sentence apart down to case, compound and finite verb. Then you stand in a tea shop and hear நான் வர்றேன், அவங்க வீட்டுக்குப் போறாங்க — and none of those endings is in your tables. Nothing you learned is wrong. What you learned is செந்தமிழ், the variety that gets written; this chapter is about the other one, and about the fact that the two are related by rule.

விதிகள் · The rules

தமிழுக்கு இரு நிலை உண்டு — எழுதப்படும் செந்தமிழ், பேசப்படும் பேச்சுத் தமிழ். இரண்டும் ஒரே மொழியின் இரு வழக்குகள்.
விதி 1
Tamil runs on two registers: செந்தமிழ், which is written, and பேச்சுத் தமிழ், which is spoken. Almost nobody writes the second, and nobody converses in the first.

The split is sharp enough that linguists call it diglossia — Charles Ferguson's 1959 term, whose four defining cases were Arabic, Swiss German, Modern Greek and Haitian Creole. Tamil was not on that original list, but it has been one of the most closely studied diglossias ever since. Speech is not sloppy writing: it has its own consistent rules. Speak செந்தமிழ் to a friend and you sound like a stage play; read the news in pure spoken Tamil and it sounds wrong. Each register has a place, and the skill is knowing which one you are in.

வேறுபாடு பெரும்பாலும் சொல்லின் இறுதியில் — வினைமுற்றின் காலவிகுதியில் — நிகழ்கிறது.
விதி 2
The present marker -கிற- contracts to -ற- (வருகிறேன் → வர்றேன், போகிறான் → போறான்), the rational plural -ஆர்கள் becomes -ஆங்க (போகிறார்கள் → போறாங்க, வந்தார்கள் → வந்தாங்க), and the அஃறிணை -கிறது becomes -உது (வருகிறது → வருது), shortening further in the everyday இருக்கிறது → இருக்கு. The stem stays; only the ending shortens, so these are rules, not new words.
வினை மட்டுமன்று; பெயர், வேற்றுமை, மறுப்புச் சொல் ஆகியவற்றின் இறுதியும் சுருங்கும்.
விதி 3
Not only verbs: final -ஐ weakens to -அ (இல்லை → இல்ல, புத்தகத்தை → புத்தகத்த), the plural -கள் drops its ள் (உங்கள் → உங்க, புத்தகங்கள் → புத்தகங்க) and after -ர் closes up to -ங்க (அவர்கள் → அவங்க), the dative loses its literary shape (வீட்டிற்கு → வீட்டுக்கு), and the locative -இல் thins to -ல (வீட்டில் → வீட்ல, மேசையில் → மேசைல).

Here is your mechanical test: look at the last word of the sentence. Tamil is verb-final, so the verb is where the evidence is. A full ending — -கிறேன், -கின்றன், -ஆர்கள், -ஆகும், இல்லை — means செந்தமிழ். A clipped one — -றேன், -ங்க, இருக்கு, இல்ல — means speech. A second check: the neuter plural. Writing has புத்தகங்கள் மேசையில் இருக்கின்றன; speech has புத்தகங்க மேசை மேல இருக்கு, with no separate plural verb at all.

இது நேற்றைய சிதைவன்று: தொல்காப்பியமே செந்தமிழ் நிலத்தையும் அதைச் சூழ்ந்த பன்னிரு நிலத்தின் திசைச்சொல்லையும் வேறுபடுத்திக் காட்டியது.
விதி 4
This is not modern decay. The Tolkāppiyam, the oldest Tamil grammar we have, already sets the செந்தமிழ் land apart from the twelve lands around it, whose own words it names திசைச்சொல்: “செந்தமிழ் சேர்ந்த பன்னிரு நிலத்தும் தம் குறிப்பினவே திசைச்சொல் கிளவி” (சொல்லதிகாரம், எச்சவியல்). The name கொடுந்தமிழ் for that outer Tamil belongs to the later commentators, not to Tolkāppiyam itself — but the line was drawn by the tradition.

Tolkāppiyam's line is regional, today's is written against spoken — but the insight is the same: a grammar describes one selected variety, not everything people say. The living regional varieties are சென்னைத் தமிழ், கொங்குத் தமிழ் (Coimbatore and Erode), மதுரைத் தமிழ், நெல்லைத் தமிழ் (Tirunelveli), and across the water யாழ்ப்பாணத் தமிழ், which keeps older words and forms than the mainland does. All of them are Tamil.

தனித்தமிழ் இயக்கம் வடசொற்களை நீக்கித் தமிழ்ச் சொற்களை நிலைநாட்டியது; அது சொல்லைத் திருத்தியது, வழக்கை அன்று.
விதி 5
The தனித்தமிழ் இயக்கம் (Pure Tamil movement), led by மறைமலை அடிகள் in the early twentieth century, worked to replace Sanskrit loanwords (வடசொல்) with Tamil ones: புஸ்தகம் → நூல், பாஷை → மொழி, ஜலம் → நீர், ஆகாரம் → உணவு. He even Tamilised his own name — வேதாசலம் became மறைமலை, word for word.

Now notice a sharp contrast. Telugu's movement under Gidugu Ramamurthy, and the báihuà movement in Chinese, pulled writing toward speech and closed the register gap. The Tamil movement asked a different question — which words are Tamil? — and reformed the vocabulary while leaving the written register where it stood. The result is that Telugu's gap has largely closed and Tamil's has not. Coinages like கணினி, தொலைபேசி and தொலைக்காட்சி are that same movement still at work.

படிப்படியாக · Step by step

Practice

“நான் நாளைக்கு உங்க வீட்டுக்கு வர்றேன்” — இது எந்த வழக்கு? Which register is this sentence in?
செந்தமிழ் “அவர்கள் போகிறார்கள்” — பேச்சில் “அவங்க ________.” Put the literary sentence into spoken Tamil.
செந்தமிழ்ச் சொல்லை அதன் பேச்சு வடிவத்தோடு பொருத்துக. Match each literary form with its spoken form.
செந்தமிழ் நிலத்தையும் சுற்றியுள்ள நிலங்களின் திசைச்சொல்லையும் முதலில் வேறுபடுத்திக் காட்டிய நூல் எது? Which text first sets the செந்தமிழ் land apart from the regional words (திசைச்சொல்) around it?
தனித்தமிழ் இயக்கம் எதைச் செய்தது? What did the Pure Tamil movement actually change?

பயன்படுத்து · Use it

Now do this. Open a Tamil newspaper and read one report, watching the verb endings: that is செந்தமிழ். Then listen to ten minutes of a Tamil film, write down five verbs you hear, and rebuild the literary form of each. Then open a modern Tamil novel: the narration will be செந்தமிழ் and the dialogue inside the quotation marks will be பேச்சுத் தமிழ் — the whole diglossia sitting on one page. Finally listen to a news bulletin and hear it stand between the two. Knowing which register you are in is what it means to have finished this course.
