விளக்கம் · Explanation

அஃறிணை (பொருள், விலங்கு) என்றால் இறந்தகால ஈறு வேறு. ஒன்றன்பால் (one thing) → -அது: மழை பெய்தது, நாய் வந்தது. பலவின்பால் (many things) → -அன: நாய்கள் வந்தன, பறவைகள் பறந்தன.

When the subject is irrational — a thing or animal — the ending changes by number. One thing takes -அது: மழை பெய்தது (it rained), நாய் வந்தது (the dog came). Many things take -அன: நாய்கள் வந்தன, பறவைகள் பறந்தன (the birds flew).

உயர்திணையில் (மனிதர்) -ஆன்/-ஆள்/-ஆர்கள் என்றோம்; அஃறிணையில் -அது/-அன என்போம். இது திணை–பால்–எண் இணக்கம்.

So for people you use -ஆன்/-ஆள்/-ஆர்கள், but for things and animals you use -அது (one) and -அன (many). This is the tiṇai–gender–number agreement at the heart of Tamil.
