ஒரே கருத்து ஊருக்கு ஊர் வேறுபட்ட சொல், ஒலியில் வரும். இவை வட்டார வழக்குகள். எல்லாமே தமிழ்தான்; அடையாளம் காண்பதே நம் நோக்கம், பேசுவது அல்ல.

The same idea takes different words and sounds from town to town — these are வட்டார வழக்குகள் (regional dialects). All are Tamil; our goal here is to recognise them, not to speak them.

சில அடையாளங்கள்: சென்னை — “மொக்கை”, “மாமா/மச்சான்”; மதுரை — “லேய்”, கடைசியில் “லே”; கோவை — மென்மையான “…ஈங்க”; யாழ்ப்பாணம் — “நல்லாருக்கீங்களா”, செந்தமிழுக்கு நெருக்கம். இவற்றைக் கேட்டால் ஊரை யூகிக்கலாம்.

Some tells: Chennai — மொக்கை, மாமா/மச்சான்; Madurai — the call லேய் and a trailing லே; Coimbatore — a gentle …ஈங்க; Jaffna — நல்லாருக்கீங்களா, closer to formal Tamil. Hearing these, you can guess the region.
