காக்கையும் குடமும்

கதை — ஒரு காக்கைக்கு மிகவும் தாகம் ஆனது. அது தண்ணீர் தேடி அலைந்தது.
A crow grew very thirsty. It wandered about looking for water.

கதை — ஒரு குடத்தில் கொஞ்சம் தண்ணீர் இருந்தது; ஆனால் அது குடத்தின் அடியில் இருந்தது.
There was a little water in a pot, but it lay at the bottom of the pot.

கதை — காக்கை சிறு கற்களை ஒவ்வொன்றாகக் குடத்துக்குள் போட்டது.
The crow dropped small stones into the pot one by one.

கதை — தண்ணீர் மேலே உயர்ந்தது; காக்கை குடித்துத் தாகம் தீர்த்தது.
The water rose up; the crow drank and quenched its thirst.

விளக்கம் · Explanation

இது அறிவையும் முயற்சியையும் சொல்லும் பழங்கதை. காக்கை அடித்து வருந்தாமல், சிந்தித்து, கல் போட்டுத் தண்ணீரை உயர்த்தியது. கதையில் வரும் வினைகள் இறந்த காலத்தில் உள்ளன: ஆனது, இருந்தது, போட்டது, உயர்ந்தது.

This old tale praises wit and effort. Instead of despairing, the crow thought, dropped stones, and raised the water. Notice the past-tense verbs: ஆனது (became), இருந்தது (was), போட்டது (put), உயர்ந்தது (rose).

திருக்குறள் கூறுவது போல், “முயற்சி திருவினையாக்கும்” — விடாமுயற்சி நற்பயனைத் தரும். கதையின் கருத்து இதுவே.

As the Tirukkuṟaḷ says, முயற்சி திருவினையாக்கும் — 'effort turns into fortune (good results)'. That is the moral of the tale.
