On the first day of Thai, Tamils celebrate Pongal. It is the harvest festival.
They cook sweet pongal with new rice; the pot boils over.
Everyone shouts joyfully, 'Pongalo Pongal!'
The next day is Mattu Pongal; they honour the cattle that help with ploughing.

பொங்கல் தமிழரின் அறுவடைத் திருநாள். தை மாதத் தொடக்கத்தில், புதிய அரிசியை வெல்லத்துடன் பால் பொங்கல் ஆக்கி, பானை பொங்கி வழியும்போது “பொங்கலோ பொங்கல்!” என்று வாழ்த்துகிறார்கள்.
Pongal is the Tamil harvest festival. At the start of the month Thai, new rice is cooked with jaggery into sweet pongal; as the pot boils over, people cheer 'Pongalo Pongal!'
பழமொழி: “தை பிறந்தால் வழி பிறக்கும்” — தை மாதம் வந்தால் நல்ல வழி, புதிய நம்பிக்கை பிறக்கும். மாட்டுப் பொங்கலன்று உழவில் உதவும் மாடுகளை நன்றியுடன் வணங்குவது சிறப்பு.
Proverb: தை பிறந்தால் வழி பிறக்கும் — 'when Thai is born, a way is born'; the new month brings hope and openings. On Mattu Pongal, the cattle that help in farming are thanked and honoured.
